10th Anniversary celebrations

A small subgroup of 5 committee members began planning our 10-year celebration event, held on 6th August 2024, way back in early April of that year, after the committee agreed it was a good idea to have something to celebrate our 10 years of existence as an operational u3a Branch.

The chosen venue was Wem Cricket club, with seating inside the club for about 75 people.  The popularity of the event (around 120 people signed up) however did mean that there had to be lots of additional seating outside, both on the porch area and on the grass.  Luckily the day turned out to be warm and sunny, so the gazebos did come in very handy for shade rather than rain!  We were hoping to have a very special M.C. for the day in Martin Wood, Shrewsbury's Town Crier for 40 years, but he was taken quite poorly a couple of weeks before.  We did manage to borrow a 7’ 2” cardboard cut-out of Martin, which looked over and smiled down on all our celebrations, including when the Mayor of Wem Cllr David Parry together with one of the founder members of the original Steering Group, cut our fabulous 10-year Celebration Cake. A fun quiz over lunch also helped to keep people occupied (& VERY chatty!).

Wem u3a Singing for Fun Group provided the 'sing-a-long' entertainment in two sets, one before and one after a superb buffet lunch. Most people knew the words of their songs and joined in, definitely adding to our 'fun'. The words of the last song were written especially for this event by one of the Singing for Fun group members and was sung to the tune of 'I can't stop loving you'.  All great fun, and all made possible only because of the many members who contributed in so many ways.

We were all grateful to be part of this amazing group that is Wem & District u3a - long may it continue!  Many photos were taken by the Photographic Group and, if any member is particularly keen to have a copy of one of the photos in high resolution, please contact the Group.
